Company and brand

The company is Kimpex. The tracks are Commander.

Kimpex began in 1967 as Gilles Soucy Inc., selling snowmobile clutches out of a converted school bus in Drummondville, Quebec. By 1978 the company was manufacturing its own parts — snowmobile tracks among the first of them — and it spent the following decades growing into one of North America’s larger powersports parts and accessories distributors.

Commander is the part of that business aimed squarely at ATV and UTV owners. Kimpex created the brand in 2005 and shipped the first Commander tracks in 2006. It is a dedicated ATV and UTV track-system line, combining all-season capability with systems built for everything from recreational ATVs to heavy-duty side-by-sides — owned and distributed exclusively by Kimpex, and still built in Drummondville.

What that history buys a customer is unglamorous and useful: Kimpex has been making rubber track products since the 1970s, and Commander systems are designed around traction, flotation, durability, steering you can live with, and components you can actually service rather than replace whole.

The lineup

Three Commander systems. Three different jobs.

These are not three price points for the same product. Each one is built for a size of machine and a kind of work, and the split between them is unusually clean: one is ATV only, one is UTV only, and one is for heavy-duty side-by-sides.

Which Kimpex Commander system fits your work?

Vehicle type narrows it to one system for most buyers. Where there is a real choice, footprint and frame are what separate them.

Fitment

Start with the machine — not the marketing.

Track systems require more than a matching bolt pattern. The machine, model year, adapter, anti-rotation components and vehicle weight all matter. Select your machine and we'll show you the compatible Kimpex Commander options.

What you are buying

Why choose a Kimpex Commander system?

Five things that matter on a track system, and where the three Commander models differ. Where a figure belongs to one model rather than the line, it says which.

All-season design

Current Commander systems are built for snow and for everything that is not snow — mud, marsh, sand, gravel and dirt roads. That is a design intent, not a licence to ignore the system’s own operating guidance: sustained running on hard, abrasive surfaces and at high speed is what wears a rubber track out early.

Practical flotation

A track spreads the machine’s weight across far more ground than four tires do, which is what keeps it on top of snow and out of soft ground. Footprint is the number that governs it, and it is the clearest single difference between the three systems.

HD4 2,710 sq in · WSS4 2,430 sq in · WS4 2,045 sq in

Manageable steering

Track geometry and how much of the track is in contact with the ground both change how hard a machine is to turn. The systems differ here, so this is worth asking about for your specific machine rather than assuming all three steer alike — the lighter ATV system and the heavy-duty UTV system are not comparable.

Serviceable components

Wheels, bearings, seals, sprockets, tensioners and the tracks themselves are replaceable items, not sealed assemblies. The HD4 goes further with visual spring tension indicators, so checking tension does not mean guessing.

Tension indicators: HD4

Real choice at three levels

Three systems means a buyer can match the system to the machine and the workload instead of over- or under-buying. An ATV owner clearing a driveway and a rancher running a heavy side-by-side through mud need different hardware, and Commander covers both ends without forcing either into the middle.

Ownership

Keep your Commander system working

Wheels, bearings, seals, tensioners and the tracks themselves are wear items. Knowing what a complete install consists of — and what is still supported on an older system — is most of the job.

What a complete Commander install consists of

A track system on its own is not a finished install. Which of these ships with a given order depends on the system and your machine, so confirm the list against your exact vehicle before you order — this is the single most common thing customers are caught out by.

  1. The track system

Four track units — two front, two rear — with the frames, wheels and tracks.

  2. A vehicle-specific adapter or attachment kit

What bolts the system to your particular make, model and year. This is the part that changes when you change machines.

  3. Front anti-rotation components

Stops the front units rotating with the suspension instead of tracking the ground.

  4. Rear anti-rotation components

The same job at the rear, with different geometry and different parts.

  5. Spacers and hardware where required

Some machines need additional spacing or hardware to clear bodywork, brakes or suspension.

Still running an older Commander system?

Older Commander track systems may still have serviceable components available. Start with your model, serial number, or part diagram, and we’ll help identify what is still supported.

Before you order

Get the system — and the setup — right

Most of the calls we take about Commander systems are not about which model is better. They are about whether a specific machine takes the system at all, and what else has to be in the box for the install to finish in one weekend. We are at 11617 E Trent Ave in Spokane Valley, Washington, with tracks, parts and install support under one roof.

Questions

Kimpex and Commander, answered

Is Commander the same company as Kimpex?

Commander is Kimpex’s ATV and UTV track-system brand, not a separate company. Kimpex was founded in 1967 in Drummondville, Quebec, created Commander in 2005, and shipped the first Commander tracks in 2006. Commander is owned and distributed exclusively by Kimpex, which is why you will see the systems listed either way — "Kimpex HD4" and "Commander HD4" are the same product.

Which Kimpex Commander system fits my ATV or UTV?

It comes down to the make, model and year of your machine and the adapter Kimpex publishes for it. The broad split is straightforward: the WS4 is ATV only, the WSS4 is UTV only, and the HD4 is for compatible heavy-duty side-by-sides. Beyond that, fitment is specific — run your machine through the fitment tool on this page, or call us and we will confirm the system and the mounting components before you order.

What is the difference between the HD4, WSS4 and WS4?

Frame, footprint and the size of machine each is built for. The HD4 is the heavy-duty system: a single-piece cast aluminium frame, 2,710 sq in of flotation surface and 13.6-inch front / 15-inch rear tracks, with visual tension indicators. The WSS4 is the all-around UTV system on a tubular steel frame with 2,430 sq in and 12.5/14-inch tracks. The WS4 is the ATV system, also tubular steel, at 2,045 sq in and 11.5/13-inch tracks. One number worth reading carefully: Kimpex rates the HD4 for machines up to 4,000 lb. That is the weight of the vehicle the system is fitted to, not a payload or towing figure — for what your machine can carry or pull, go by the vehicle manufacturer’s own limits, which tracks do not raise.

Can Commander tracks be used outside of snow?

Yes — current Commander systems are designed as all-season equipment, and the product data covers snow, mud, marshland, sand, gravel and dirt roads. What shortens a rubber track’s life is sustained running on hard, abrasive surfaces such as pavement, and sustained high speed. Crossing a road is normal; commuting on one is not what the system is for.

Does a Kimpex track system include the mounting hardware?

A complete install is the track system plus a vehicle-specific adapter or attachment kit, front and rear anti-rotation components, and on some machines additional spacers or hardware. What is included with a given order depends on the system and your machine, so check the product page for the system you are considering, or call us and we will confirm the full parts list against your exact vehicle before you order. It is the single most common thing customers are surprised by.

How much speed will I lose after installing Commander tracks?

Kimpex publishes an average speed loss of about 30% for the HD4 and about 35% for the WSS4 and WS4 compared with tires. Those are averages for planning, not specifications — the real figure depends on your machine, its gearing, the load and the ground you are on. Expect to run in low range in deep conditions.

Do Commander tracks increase ground clearance?

Yes, and Kimpex publishes a figure per system: about 6 inches for the HD4, about 5.5 inches for the WSS4 and about 5 inches for the WS4. Because the increase depends on your machine as well as the system, treat these as the published averages and check the specification on the product page for the system you are considering.

Where can I find replacement parts for an older Commander system?

Start with the model and, if the system has one, the serial number — that is what turns into the correct exploded diagram so you can order the individual component. Older Commander systems often still have serviceable parts available even when the system itself is discontinued. If the markings are worn off or the system predates the lookup, call us with photos and we can usually identify it.

Stop guessing. Find the Commander system built for your machine.
